Nawlins Food, and Some Other Stuff

We pretty much ate all day Monday. It was great. At breakfast, Alex spilled his whole bowl of cereal on his lap. That was pretty cool.

Our first stop was the French Quarter. We went to Cafe Du Monde and had amazing beignets with a pound of powdered sugar on them. We also had delicious orange juice there. So good.

We walked around the French Quarter and ended up at Bourbon Street. We had been told not to take kids there but that was the only street that had any people on it. It was about 10am at this point. The whole French Quarter was like a ghost town. They hate Mondays; everything was closed. We walked a few blocks along Bourbon Street and then decided we had seen enough.

We went to Jackson Square and had Alex and Edison sketched by an artist. It was really fun and I am glad Edison has one now, and Alex has a new one since it's been almost two years since his last one.

We went to lunch at The Joint. We tried going there on Saturday night but they were out of pulled pork. I am glad we decided to come back for it, because it was delicious.

While reading about the history of Hurricane Katrina, we learned about crosses that were spray painted on the front of houses while the rescue teams were searching them. I thought we would have to look for a long time to find a house that still had spray paint on it, seven years later. I was wrong. They were everywhere. We didn't see any houses with a death number (the lower quadrant) but I was surprised that people had not painted over the spray paint. There are a lot of houses that are still vacant because the owners couldn't afford to come back and rebuild. I noticed this was especially true in the Lower Ninth Ward.

After lunch, we went back to the hotel so the boys could take their usual naps. We weren't planning to do this, but there was nothing else to do. We were kind of bored. The boys slept until 5:15. We loaded them up and went to get dinner at Parasol's.

I got a roast beef po' boy and Sam got a shrimp po' boy. It was a good thing they gave me a fork or I would have licked my tray. It was by far the best thing I ate in New Orleans.

For dessert, we went to Sucre for gelato. It was recommended by someone at church. It was pretty good, but I was ridiculously full from dinner. I got mango sorbet and Sam had a brownie gelato.

We bathed the boys and then went to bed. The early bedtimes really helped us get through the days.

  1. I went back to see the old sketch of Alex and thought that was a picture of Edison in that grouping. I didn't think they looked that similar, but I guess they do. That's also an amazing steel chair that Edison is sitting on. I wonder how many coats of paint it has had.
