Alex started asking us if we could go camping. I am not sure where it came from, but I figured it would be good to go before it got too cold. Sam got home from work a little early and we loaded up our awesome truck and drove 45 minutes to Lewis and Clark State Park.
The person at the entry to the park had no idea what she was doing. We had to buy firewood there because it has to be North Dakota wood, so the park rangers delivered it to our campground. It was so strange. But while we were waiting for them to deliver it, we noticed some wood at the next campground's fire pit. No one was there so we decided to take it. The next day we saw a note that said, "We are coming back!" We totally stole their firewood. Whoops.
We had "Deeee-licious" tin foil dinners.
After dinner we made s'mores. Such a sticky mess. The boys only wanted the chocolate anyway.
This kid's face kills me. And his little legs. How is he so cute?!
We got all of the beds set up in the tent and then headed down to throw rocks into Lake Sakakawea.
The boys would have sat there all day throwing rocks.
Sam impressed them by throwing "Gi-iant" rocks!
We stayed in a part of the park that was for tent camping but there was another part that had trailers and motor homes. People there had satellite dishes installed. They lived there! Over on that side, there was a playground.
At bedtime, we tried putting the boys in the tent alone but they were just walking around. I was getting tired so I just went in there. I fell asleep at 10:45 and Sam and Edison were already asleep and Alex was still wandering around. A two man tent is actually meant for one and a half people, or two midgets. But we put two full grown people and two midgets in it. It was cozy.
I woke up at 11:45pm and Alex was asleep. It was so windy. It wasn't very cold at all but it was so windy. I woke up a few times because the tent was collapsing on us from the side and then if the wind died down, it would pop up again.
We woke up at 8am (two hours later than I predicted) and I was trying to keep the boys quiet so they wouldn't wake up the people in the two tents next to us. When we got out of the tent, the other people were already packed up and gone! I don't think they stayed through the night.
Sam took the boys back down to the lake while I made breakfast burritos. We had to eat in the tent because our plates were blowing away.
We broke camp and then went on a hike where I got a cactus in my foot, through the side of my tennis shoes. It was painful.
We left at 11am and Edison promptly fell asleep. Although it wasn't the best night's sleep I've ever had, it was much better than I was expecting it to be. The whole experience was actually fun and I think we will do it again soon!
That last picture of the boys sitting on the bench is so cute! And that cactus in your foot does sound painful!
